Joan GILMOUR — Artist Biography
Joan Gilmour is a Melbourne-born artist whose work reflects a lifelong dedication to tonal realism, working across oil, pastel and watercolour.
Joan grew up in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, initially studying painting with the Mitcham Arts Society before undertaking many years of private tuition with the late Marjorie Martin, developing her skills in the tonal realist tradition.
Her artistic journey later took her to the United Kingdom, where she lived and painted for eight years. During this time, Joan continued to develop her practice and sold numerous works, with her paintings finding homes in private collections in different parts of the world.
After returning to Australia in 1992, Joan continued her artistic studies, receiving further tuition from Fiona Bilbrough and Brian Armstrong, as well as participating in workshops and demonstrations with accomplished artists including David Chen, Max Wilkes and Hans Van Voldrop.
Joan has exhibited extensively throughout Victoria, including at numerous Rotary and community art shows, and has held successful solo exhibitions at Red Hill 141 Gallery, as well as joint exhibitions with her husband, fellow artist Jeff Gilmour.
Over the course of her painting career, Joan has received an extraordinary 500-plus awards, first prizes, Best in Show and Highly Commended awards. Her more recent achievements include Best in Show at San Remo Art Show (2018), Bright Art Show (2021), Chelsea Art Show (2022), Yea Art Show (2022), Chelsea Art Show (2023) and Knox Art Show (2024).
While accomplished across several mediums, Joan has more recently been enjoying the expressive qualities of watercolour, continuing to paint and exhibit with the same enthusiasm that has characterised her long artistic career.
Joan’s work celebrates the traditional skills of observation, tone, light and composition. From evocative landscapes to carefully arranged still lifes, her paintings demonstrate the depth of experience and craftsmanship developed over a lifetime devoted to art.
JOTE’s In-House Artist
Joan is also proudly the in-house artist for Joy of the Earth Community Garden (JOTE). Her creativity and artistic experience bring another dimension to the garden, celebrating the connection between art, nature and community. Through her involvement with JOTE, Joan shares her love of art in a welcoming community setting and helps make creativity an important part of the life of the garden.
