What is Joy of the Earth Community Garden?

Joy of the Earth Community Garden (JOTE) is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run community garden that provides a shared space for people to grow food, learn sustainable gardening practices, and connect with others in the community.

Where is the garden located?

Who can join the community garden?

Membership is open to anyone who supports the garden’s values of community, sustainability, and respectful shared use of space.

Do I need gardening experience to join?

No experience is needed. Members range from beginners to experienced gardeners, and learning together is part of the joy of the garden.

What types of membership are available?

  • Garden Bed Members – members who maintain an allocated garden bed
  • Social Members – members without a garden bed who actively participate in garden activities, working bees, and events

How do I apply for membership?

You can apply by completing the membership application form available on our website. Applications are reviewed by the committee, and garden beds are allocated when available.

Is there a waiting list for garden beds?

Yes. When all beds are allocated, new applicants are placed on a waiting list and offered a bed when one becomes available.

How much does membership cost?

Membership fees are reviewed annually and are used to maintain garden infrastructure, water systems, shared tools, and garden programs. Current fees are listed on the website.

What are the garden’s opening hours?

Public visits: By appointment only or during advertised open days and events

Members: Unlimited access

What are working bees? Do I have to attend?

Working bees are regular volunteer sessions where members help with shared garden tasks such as maintenance, composting, and improvements. Participation is strongly encouraged to keep the garden thriving.

Can children attend the garden?

Yes. Children are welcome when supervised by a responsible adult. Special child-friendly events and education sessions may also be offered throughout the year.

Is the garden organic?

Yes. The garden follows organic and sustainable gardening principles. Chemical herbicides, pesticides, and synthetic fertilisers are not permitted.

What happens to surplus produce?

Surplus produce from shared areas and donation beds may be donated to local charities or community organisations.

Are tools provided?

Shared tools are available for members to use within the garden. Members are also welcome to bring their own tools.

How is the garden managed?

The garden is managed by an elected Committee of Management, supported by volunteers. Policies and procedures guide garden operations, safety, and governance.

Can I visit before joining?

Yes. Prospective members are welcome to visit by appointment or during open days to see the garden and ask questions.

Can community groups or schools use the garden?

Yes, subject to approval and availability. Please contact us to discuss partnerships, education programs, or group visits.

How can I get involved if I don’t want a garden bed?

Social membership, volunteering, event support, working bees, and education programs are all great ways to be involved without maintaining a bed.

What can I put in the community garden compost?

You can compost:

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Pet and human hair
  • Dried leaves, straw or hay
  • Non-glossy paper (torn up)
  • Cardboard (torn up)

Please follow signage at the compost bays to help keep our system healthy.

When can I access the compost?

Public: Anyone is welcome to drop off personal compost during open garden sessions or whenever the garden gate is open.

Members: Compost bays are accessible at any time.

Can my restaurant or organisation contribute food waste?

No, sorry. At this stage we only have capacity to manage small, personal quantities of compost and are unable to accept commercial or organisational food waste.
