π± Growing with care for our environment
Sustainability is at the heart of Joy of the Earth Community Garden.
At JOTE, we aim to grow food, care for our shared garden and bring people together in ways that respect and protect the environment.
From composting and water-wise gardening to supporting pollinators and growing food locally, we are continually looking for practical ways to reduce waste, use resources responsibly and create a healthy garden for people, plants and wildlife.
β»οΈ COMPOSTING & WASTE REDUCTION
Turning waste into a resource.
π± Composting β Garden and suitable household organic waste can be composted and returned to the soil rather than going to landfill.
πͺ± Worm farming β Our worm-farm systems help transform organic material into valuable nutrients for the garden.
π Garden waste β Where practical, plant material is reused within the garden through composting and other sustainable gardening practices.
π₯ Reducing food waste β Surplus produce from JOTE’s shared growing areas and donation beds can be shared within our community rather than going to waste.
π Giving back β JOTE also donates surplus produce and donated pantry items to Bayside Community Collective, helping support people in our wider community.

π§ WATER-WISE GARDENING
Every drop matters.
π§ Rainwater collection β Rainwater tanks help us capture and make use of water within the garden.
π± Water-wise growing β Members are encouraged to use water thoughtfully and avoid unnecessary waste.
π Healthy soils β Compost, organic matter and mulching help improve soil health and retain moisture.
πΏ Right plant, right place β Thoughtful planting helps us create productive garden areas while making responsible use of water and other resources.
π POLLINATORS & BIODIVERSITY
A productive garden needs more than vegetables.
JOTE provides habitat and food for bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects through flowering plants, garden borders and shared planting areas.

π₯ GROWING FOOD LOCALLY
Fresh food doesn’t have to travel far when it’s growing right here.
JOTE gives community members the opportunity to grow fresh, seasonal food close to home while learning sustainable gardening practices.
Individual garden beds allow members to grow their own produce, while shared growing areas contribute to the wider life of the garden.

π³ OUR COMMUNITY ORCHARD
Our community orchard is another important part of JOTE’s sustainable food-growing environment.
The orchard provides seasonal fruit while creating opportunities for members to learn about fruit-tree care, pruning, companion planting, soil health and pollination.
As JOTE continues to grow, we are also working to renew and improve the orchard, making it more productive, sustainable and enjoyable for the community.

π EVERYONE CAN PLAY A PART
Small actions across a community can make a big difference.
Whether you’re tending your own garden bed, adding appropriate material to the compost, planting flowers for pollinators, conserving water or helping during Garden & Gather, there are plenty of ways to contribute to a more sustainable JOTE.
Together, we’re growing more than food β we’re caring for the place we share. π
